A long time ago, I had the idea of returning to my hometown for research. During the winter vacation of my sophomore year, I saw the recruitment notice issued by the “Rotating Eagle Future” innovation and entrepreneurship team on campus. As a hobby, I signed up and passed the interview, and I was in charge of the agricultural drone market research, the latest news sorting and other work in the team to determine the future development direction of the team.
Without investigation, there is no right to speak. This is our personal experience when doing projects. We often look for information on agricultural and corporate websites to analyze the leading companies in the agricultural drone market and their market share. However, the information obtained from the second-hand data is limited, and it is impossible to clarify the situation in the countryside after the land transfer, and the target group of the online questionnaire is also uncertain. This made me firm in the idea of going to the front line for research. This summer, I set up a practice team of “Aiding Agriculture in the Sky”, and led my friends to set foot on the yellow soil, into the farmland, and approach the farmers.
Where to go for research? I am a child from the countryside. With the expectation of giving back to my hometown, I returned to my rural hometown after a six-year absence: Baizhuang, Dutang Administrative Village, Zhukou Town, Taikang County, Zhoukou City, Henan Province.
My mother heard that I was going to go back to investigate, and she was very supportive. She found the phone number of the village party secretary and sent it to me as soon as possible. When the village party secretary heard that the college students were going to conduct research, he happily used the loudspeaker at the head of the village to publicize it for us. This not only moved me, but also strengthened my determination to do practical things for the villagers.
Combining what we have learned in our majors, we are going to investigate the actual needs and application of this new technology of agricultural plant protection drones in Baizhuang to help farmers in their production operations.
Going to the grassroots level in the countryside is easy to say, difficult to do, and really tiring, but I have gained a lot. At first, we just planned to interview drone sellers in order to have a more comprehensive understanding of the current application of agricultural plant protection drones in grassroots rural areas. It happened that they had a drone operation the next morning, and we unexpectedly gained the opportunity to watch it live. You must know that we have only seen video materials before.
Taikang County belongs to the North China Plain. It is a two-cropping system a year. From July to September, corn grows and matures. During this period, it is necessary to spray insecticides to prevent and control diseases and insect pests. However, the weather is hot in summer, and the process of spraying the liquid by the drone operation will be lost due to the high temperature. In order to reduce the loss of liquid medicine and ensure the effectiveness of the operation to the greatest extent, the drone operation needs to be carried out before 10 am and after 5 pm.
The work place is far away. We got up at 3 am and arrived at the meeting place at 4:30. At 7 o’clock, the drone operation started. It turned out that the live viewing was so shocking! We have witnessed the convenience and efficiency of drones with our own eyes. In a blink of an eye, the entire farmland has been planted.
In the subsequent interviews, the farmers praised the drones for plant protection: “In the past, I did everything by myself, but now many of them are mechanized sowing, mechanized harvesting, and drones are used for medicine. Today’s farmers are not as tired as they used to be. It’s also more comfortable!” I was deeply touched by the sincere feelings of the villagers. Every bit of progress in science and technology may bring great changes to the lives of farmers. As a young generation with knowledge, we have a great responsibility on our shoulders!
Back to school, my friends and I devoted ourselves to the research report writing with unprecedented energy. This report will be applied to the scientific research of Beihang’s innovation and entrepreneurship team to improve the performance of agricultural drones, and will be transformed into practical achievements in helping agriculture through technology.
Now, my friends and I are more confident and motivated to popularize the application of plant protection drones. We hope that more farmers can use advanced technology that saves time, effort and money. This is our promise, and it is also the promise of young students!
