Pine caterpillars belong to the family Lepidoptera and mainly feed on pine needles. They are one of the most harmful insect pests in my country’s forests and are known as “invisible forest fires”. It is understood that the overwintering larvae of masson pine usually resume feeding in April every year, and the damage is the most serious in mid-to-late May. Once infested, the pine tree can die. Wang Zhangjun, head of the forest protection station of the County Forestry Bureau, said: “Now is the best time to prevent and control the masson pine caterpillar. This time, the control area is about 7,000 mu. We purchased 8 tons of Beauveria bassiana medicine in advance and focused on spraying in Longbo Town. Chongtou Village, Zhanggusi Village, Quanjiazhou Village in Wulipai Town and other places.”

In order to effectively control these “natural enemies” of pine forests, the County Forestry Bureau hired a third-party prevention and control company to seize the favorable opportunity of clearing after continuous rainy days to carry out drone spraying of Beauveria bassiana to ensure work efficiency and control quality.

Wang Zhangjun said that Beauveria bassiana can produce a large number of conidia under suitable temperature and humidity conditions. After the conidia grow out of the germ tube, they invade the body of the pine caterpillar through the stomata on the body surface to absorb nutrients and reproduce in large numbers. The nutrients in the body are completely consumed to achieve the effect of killing insects. “Beauveria bassiana is a kind of biological agent, which is non-toxic to humans and animals, and the conidia produced can be spread by the wind, continuously killing insects, and has the advantages of easy use, no residue, no pollution, long acting time, good control effect, etc. .”

In the next step, Shuangpai County will continue to use the forest chief system as the starting point, give full play to the role of “one chief and three members” at the township level, carry out key monitoring and forecasting of areas with frequent and high incidence of pine caterpillars over the years, and timely grasp the dynamics of the insect situation. Achieve “early prevention, early detection, and early prevention and control”, realize “forest long governance” with the “forest chief system”, and jointly protect the green water and green mountains of the double brand.
