Analysis of the Development Status of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Guangdong Province

The scale of China’s drone fleet is rapidly expanding, and the scale of drone enterprises and practitioners is growing rapidly. The operational flight volume of drones is rapidly increasing.

In 2021, the scale of drone enterprises and practitioners in China has grown rapidly. As of the end of 2021, there are a total of 12663 unmanned aviation enterprises in China. The Civil Aviation Administration has issued over 119000 drone pilot licenses. The annual flight volume of civil unmanned aerial vehicles in China has steadily stood at the level of 10 million flight hours, which is one order of magnitude higher than the traditional manned flight volume in China and equivalent to the flight volume of transportation aviation. Statistics show that as of the end of 2022, there are 13000 drone operation enterprises in China, with an annual output value of 107 billion yuan. There are 832000 registered drones, with a 60.9% increase in the number of drones compared to 2020. The number of drones flying in real-time is about 386 million, with a flight duration of about 16.689 million hours. Drones will make efforts in fields such as logistics and distribution, urban air transportation, and continuously expand their application breadth and depth.

According to the founding conference of general aviation industry innovation alliance and general aviation industry innovation and development forum held on November 7, 2022, China has become the world’s second largest civil aviation transportation market after the United States. There are nearly 100 general aviation aircraft manufacturers in China, and nearly 300 large-scale civil UAV manufacturers.

Shenzhen is known as the “drone capital”, and over 70% of consumer grade drones in China are manufactured in Shenzhen. Logistics and transportation oriented drone operation enterprises represented by SF Express and Meituan, as well as innovative drone enterprises in Xinjiang represented by consumer oriented enterprises, both have a leading position in the development of navigation and drone industries nationwide.

According to data, in 2020, there were over 1200 drone enterprises in Shenzhen, with a production value of 50 billion yuan. The export of consumer grade drones accounted for 90% of the national total, while industrial grade drones accounted for 60% of the domestic market share. In 2021, the annual output value of industrial grade drones in Shenzhen reached nearly 60 billion yuan, accounting for about 60% of the national market. The export volume of drones accounted for over 90% of the total export volume, forming a complete industrial ecological chain. At present, Shenzhen has gathered more than 1300 drone enterprises, with a production value of 75 billion yuan in 2022, accounting for about 70% of the national total. According to the Shenzhen UAV Industry Association, the market size of drones in China will reach 160 billion yuan by 2024. The drone industry has formed a relatively complete industrial ecosystem in Shenzhen, with key sectors developing rapidly.
