China Launches 2019 Agricultural Whole Process Unmanned Operation Experiment

Xinhua News Agency, Harbin, May 9 — The driverless tractor grader, driverless rice transplanter, driverless spray… On August 8, a “general mobilization” of driverless spring plowing was staged in the paddy field of Hongwei Farm of Heilongjiang Beidahuang Agricultural Reclamation Group’s Sanjiang Branch.

A team of intelligent agricultural machinery composed of multiple research institutes and enterprises participated in the experiment on that day. Various unmanned agricultural machines utilized Beidou satellite navigation, and added sensors and controllers to achieve unmanned driving operations.

In a paddy field on Hongwei Farm, six unmanned rice transplanters are transplanting rice seedlings. The relevant person in charge of Hongwei Farm introduced that a rice transplanter used to require one driver and two people to stand on both sides to place seedlings. Now, unmanned rice transplanters only require one person to place seedlings, saving 2 workers.

Liu Xiaowei, Director of the Science and Technology Promotion Department of the Agricultural Mechanization Management Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said that the development of agricultural machinery in foreign countries has reached an intelligent stage. With the development of technologies such as the Internet of Things, cloud computing, and big data, the digitization, intelligence, and precision of traditional agricultural operations in China are accelerating.

Pang Chunlin, Secretary General of the China Automotive Information Service Industry Application Alliance, said that the Three Rivers Project for the Experimental Construction of Unmanned Operation in the Whole Agricultural Process will continue until 2025, mainly undertaking the experimental task of unmanned operation in the entire process of rice in plain areas, improving and solving engineering problems such as the functionality, performance, reliability, stability, and supply chain of high-power unmanned tractors, transplanters, fertilizer applicators, harvesters, and other ground equipment, Laying the foundation for commercial application in 2020.

It is understood that this year’s agricultural unmanned operation experiment will be conducted in 10 provinces and regions including Jiangsu, Chongqing, Xinjiang, Henan, Hainan, etc., focusing on solving the key and basic problems of unmanned agricultural equipment. A national unmanned agricultural machinery cooperative association will be established, and agricultural machinery sharing will be adopted to solve the problems of aging agricultural production population, low operation efficiency, and differentiated operation standards in China, and to innovate new models of agricultural production in China.
